Dichogamy is the phenomenon where the female reproductive structures of a plant mature during a different period from the period when the male reproductive structures mature; thus preventing self fertilization, and essentially inbreeding
Evolution has maintained dichogamy to prevent self-pollination and thus to promote the crossing between different individuals and the production of more biological diversity.
