      lets us start from the question of how a battery works. it always provide electrical energy by movement of electrons from one rod (negative) to another rode which is positive (anode). you need two electrodes placed is some liquid that can easily form free electrons. we call it electrolyte and an example is like sulphuric acid. connect the two rods dipped in the acid to some voltmeter and see if it indicates current flow.

      I will give the example of an alkaline battery and make it simple;
      The anode is typically made of zinc, and manganese dioxide acts as the cathode; the electrolyte between and inside those electrodes contains ions. A series of chemical reactions that occurs in the electrodes are collectively known as oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions and these are what generate the power or electrical energy you get in a battery
